With rising interest rates and the cost of living continuing to impact our daily lives, South African car buyers are turning their attention to the secondary market in growing numbers. But this raises an important question: is it better to buy a cheaper car that uses more fuel, or pay more upfront for a modern, fuel-efficient engine?
The Upfront Affordability King: Volkswagen Dominates
According to Auto Mart's market demand data, most cash-strapped commuters still prioritise a lower purchase price over fuel savings. The single most in-demand vehicle in the under-R200 000 bracket is the Volkswagen Polo Vivo Hatch 5-Door 1.4.
This model attracted by far the most buyer interest, generating the highest number of direct enquiries via email and WhatsApp of any vehicle in the dataset. With an average listing price of just R86 581 and average mileage of 91 452km, buyers are clearly happy to accept a fuel consumption rate of 6.20L/100km in exchange for a lower price tag and the ease of finding affordable parts and servicing locally.
The standard Volkswagen Polo Hatch 1.4 Comfortline came in a close second, generating strong buyer interest at an average listing price of R90 237 and a competitive fuel consumption rate of 6.10L/100km.
The Fuel Efficiency Champions: Are Buyers Paying a Premium?
Looking purely at fuel economy, the most efficient vehicles on the Auto Mart platform are the smaller turbocharged engines in the Volkswagen range:
VW Polo Hatch 1.2TSI: an impressive 4.90L/100km
VW Polo Hatch 1.2TSI Highline: 5.10L/100km
VW Polo Hatch 1.0TSI Comfortline: 5.40L/100km
However, the data shows that this kind of fuel efficiency comes at a price. The average listing price for the 1.0TSI Comfortline is R183 024, which is more than double the cost of an older 1.4 Comfortline.
"Our data shows South African consumers are doing the math carefully," says Francois Labuschagne, Auto Mart's head of marketing, data, and automation. "A car that uses 4.90L/100km looks great on paper, but for a buyer working with a budget under R200 000, saving R90 000 on the purchase price buys thousands of litres of fuel before the more efficient car even starts paying for itself."
Beyond Volkswagen: Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia Carve Out Their Own Lanes
For buyers looking beyond the Volkswagen range, the Toyota Corolla Quest 1.6 remains a strong choice for family transport. Auto Mart data shows the Quest generated a high number of enquiries, with an average price of R86 625, average mileage of 92 591 km, and a solid fuel consumption rate of 6.60L/100km.
The Hyundai i20 1.2 Motion also performed well, selling quickly across two model variants and generating strong buyer interest. Average prices ranged from R123 866 to R138 064, while fuel consumption stayed efficient at between 5.60 and 5.90L/100km.
For Small Businesses, Utility Beats Fuel Efficiency
One of the clearest insights in the Auto Mart data is just how much demand there is for half-ton commercial vehicles under R200 000. The Nissan NP200 1.6i and its variants generated by far the highest total number of enquiries of any vehicle in the top 20. This is despite having the highest fuel consumption on the list at 8.10L/100km.
This shows that for small business owners, independent contractors, and tradespeople, carrying capacity and reliability matter more than fuel savings. Buyers in this segment are willing to accept a higher monthly fuel bill in exchange for a vehicle priced between R85 626 and R109 936. A similar pattern emerged with the Chevrolet Utility 1.4, which attracted strong interest at an average price of R87 613 and fuel consumption of 7.20L/100km.
